Weekend getaway at Lake Elementaita Lodge

Stress and burn out are a common phenomenon in today’s modern world.  Most of us can attest to this feeling, especially when you are tired of the same old routine; the traffic, the deadlines, the noise…. your mind seems to be slowing down and your body refusing any more work. Considering the current state of our economy; utility bills, the mortgage, school tuition , loan payments and all the expenses most of us have to deal with, going on a month long vacation is a dream, let alone quitting your 8am to 5pm job as most ‘self-help’ books would propose. So what do you do? You need to relax. You need to revitalise. You simply need to get-away!

For most of us, who have been watching too much TV, the word getaway brings to mind suitcases, airports and a five star hotel, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Tucked away in the Rift Valley is Kenya’s new weekend haven: Lake Elementaita . Formerly in the shadow of Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, Lake Elementaita, which lies between the two, is making a name for itself. Recently added to the list of world heritage sites, the bird rich lake is home to some of Kenya’s first eco-lodges.

Just a few kilometres off the Nairobi - Nakuru highway,  Lake Elementaita Country lodge is a place where you can drown your blues and revitalize your senses. Ideal for weekend getaways, the cabins which are all individually owned are designed to bring you back to bliss. Being eco lodges, they are different from ordinary hotels in that they are ‘ecologically friendly’, which means they are constructed from recycled materials found within the region. They aim to have a positive effect on the environment and the surrounding community so they employ local residents of the area. However, the word recycled or local should not fool you into thinking that they are less than spectacular— the lodges are a marvel. Depending on the lodge, the style of accommodation ranges from impeccable and spacious ensuite cottages, to ensuite tents or even camping facilities, so whether you fancy a snuggle by the fire place or a full on camp fire, your desires will be met. Most of the lodges offer full board services, which means all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are inclusive in your room charges. Expect no TVs   in your cottage, just room to clear your mind and breath-taking views as far as the eye can see. Wake up to the sound of birds chirping and a surreal view of the flamingo adorned lake, how you spend the rest of the day, is up to you. You can choose to; bask in the ambience, take a walking safari, have a picnic, nurture your photography skills, enjoy a game drive through the Nakuru National Park, go hot air ballooning, indulge in a massage, swim, experience a sundowner, star gaze or if you please, simply do nothing!

At the end of your weekend, expect to come home fresh and relaxed, ready to take on a new week.  So sneak away this weekend and have an eco-getaway.
